The next step for the court, beyond juveniles and the intellectual disabled, may be to set a national standard for defendants with severe mental illness. The American Bar Association, American Psychological Association, National Alliance on Mental Illness and others (in collaboration with Georgetown University and Equitas Foundation) are mounting a national campaign to take capital punishment off the table for that population.
