The Course Corrections: Public Defenders Summit on Mental Health and Criminal Justice will provide a timely opportunity for indigent defense partners from across the
-Align and focus public defender and broader criminal justice policy reform efforts
-Prioritize necessary course corrections
-Promote bold state and local targets for reform
-Identify local and national best practices for:
- managing behavioral health
- reducing incarceration
- promoting public safety and prosperity
At this event, public defenders and indigent criminal defense providers and stakeholders will present work in progress, build and solidify broad support for coordinated efforts to overcome common barriers, and situate their work on a cross-sector roadmap to a healthier, equitable and sustainably prosperous nation.
Course Corrections Summits provide an opportunity to convene key community and sector leadership, highlight outstanding programs, and build strategic communication
bridges that unite allies along an expanded community health continuum. These events serve to build consensus and strategic alignment, transforming community
perceptions of health, justice, and effective intervention strategies for the vulnerable.
Announcing Keynote Speaker
Judge Steve Leifman
Steven Leifman is Associate Administrative Judge of the Miami-Dade County Court’s Criminal Division, and a former public defender. He chairs the Florida Supreme Court’s Task Force on Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues in the Court and the Mental Health Committee for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida, where he created the
Eleventh Judicial Circuit Criminal Mental Health Project.
Day One (March 28):
Nationwide representatives of offices of public defense and selected subject matter experts will meet to share information, and discuss challenges and better practices.
Day Two (March 29):
Public defense representatives will reconvene in a high-level strategic planning session.
